It’s frustratingly common to get completely tongue tied when we’re in front of people we’d like to impress. Which is doubly unfortunate because it’s often those situations that could lead to us landing a great new job, connecting with a mentor, or even dating someone we’re smitten with.
That’s why in this video I want to cover how you can avoid that awkward trap and impress the people you admire by standing out in a positive way. To do that, we’ll be referencing someone who has done it many times: Sean Evans of Hot Ones.

1:38 - #1: Ask questions beyond the obvious ones.
3:09 - #2: Use the question preamble.
4:48 - #3: Steer conversation towards things that elicit emotion.
7:40 - #4: Tease playfully / have fun.
9:18 - #5: Comfortably express disagreement.

  • So step one, ask game show/TV interview type questions (hopefully you have a staff doing some research for you). A minute in and this video is really killing it...

  • best and worst might not work as well in France as we tend to complain as an habit to get out stuff out of our chest. ;) I remember being really happy to go to the UK and go away from that and then finding myself so happy after living in the UK, to come back and just complain about everything and realise that it's actually a healthy thing to do (of course as with all things with various degrees, there is , even in France, too much complaining). Then again I feel like complaining and us having more rights (or at least defending those who are constantly under attack for the past decades now) because we strike so much might have some corrolation ;) Also I believe, even though charisma has a role, we tend to not really need it that much, because we like to argue and debate and be sarcastic and complain, and that makes usually for either a great conversation or a bad one even if it backfires , but it's never boring , well in the majority of cases at least.

  • These are great tips! Love it. I have a question though. If you were to start a conversation with someone that you repeatedly interact, you'll tend to run out of "researchable questions", and eventually resort to the typical "How are you?" or "How was your weekend?" question, how do you avoid to do that with someone you already know and engage with on a frequent basis?

  • When I'm at a job interview and they hit me with the notorious "Why do you want to work here?", I just tell them "I need money. You want me to do a thing to get money, so I will do the thing". Then I tell them I don't understand why it's such an unacceptable answer. Majority of the time they respect it and hire me on the spot. Some of them would rather hear "Ah yes it is a good company because reasons and I like this company haha".

  • I think this can all be summed up by saying, have a genuine interest in the people you talk to. A lot of those talk show circuit interviews (Maybe except Conan) are just to fill time. The hosts really don't care about your answers. Also the interview is pre-rehearsed so how genuine can it really be?

  • This is idiotic, Sean is interviewing them, a totally different dynamic to a normal conversation. Asking 'How was it' to someone who came back from holiday is perfectly fine - it allows them to talk about whatever aspect of the holiday they want to. Asking 'Ok, what was the best food you ate there?' is a bit more specific and will often lead to a short, uninteresting answer that they're unable to link to another idea and continue the flow of the conversation and simply put you in the position of thinking of more follow-ups.
