Changing someone’s mind is hard. I believe a huge part of the reason boils down to the fact that we often trigger one another’s emotional defenses before the content of our arguments can be evaluated.
That’s why in this video I want to give you 5 do’s and don’ts to actually change someones mind and we’ll be using Steven Crowder’s “Change My Mind” segment to do it .

⏰TIMESTAMPS⏰
0:48 - #1: When persuading someone, go slow.
2:10 - #2: Build rapport.
4:08 - #3: Don't use insults.
5:49 - #4: Concisely summarize how the other person feels.
7:45 - #5: Make it clear that you're speaking from your individual perception of reality.

  • Sometimes you are trying to change the minds of the crowd or audience, thus making "dunks" effective. I wouldn't say it works every time, but it's a good tool to use in debate.

  • Hitchens is fun to watch and has fantastic wit but he is a poor debater and overall his stance only wins through overwhelming any sort of understanding that may be made. A clip i once saw had him debating a religious man (as it often goes), a crowd member asked a question of him and he flat out did not answer and instead went off on tangents and personal attacks on his opponent. The crowd loved it and it was fun to watch but he never definitively answered the question. His answer was less sure then the reason the crowd asked in the first place. But he won simply because he overwhelmed the guy actually trying to argue points. Hitchens is poor on many fronts but his charisma and wit make him a great person to watch and listen too.

    Robert CantspellRobert Cantspell16 giorni fa
    • Does he? Logical discussion, illogical discussion, persuasive verbatim, political rhetoric and personal opinion are not subject to just one side but it turns out that one side is a better conduit of those things and displays it in more abundance. Crowder covers everything the video says, both positive and negative. Is there any left speakers who encompasses all of that and also has a ready archive available to use? Is their a left leaning speaker who can match what Jorden Peterson puts out across the board? These alt right guys are perfect examples to highlight persuasion and discussion tactics. And using them as an example signifies nothing except an acceptance of their ability to persuade and debate and through that a way for breakdowns of what they do. It is not 'liking' them that gets them on the show.

  • I'd like to see someone retaliate on Steven's domination of space in these segments. He's always leaning into the other person's space in a way that's aggressive and borderline physically threatening. Just once, someone should match his posture and lean into him the way he leans into others, going literally nose to nose with him, rather than meekly leaning back and conceding the space, as the subjects in this video do. It wouldn't change anyone's mind, but it would underscore on an obvious bullying tactic.

  • Crowder never wants to debate a peer in the ITworlds community like Dave Pakman, Sam Seder or Kyle Kulinski. He only wants to bring his massive binder and preprepared arguments to lecture unprepared students. He is a coward.

    • _Logician_ not magician. I heard magician at first, too, but I listened to it again, and I remembered the word logician from my freshmen year philosophy professor. This even makes more sense: To a _logic-ian_ only logic matters, to a Magic-ian, as I'm sure you (a fellow man of mystery) already know this, the real magic is done before you ever start the sleight of hand.

  • Steven says it over and over and maybe the name should reflect it, but those videos are less for him to have his mind cancer and more for a discussion to take place where both sides can have their viewpoints discussed and be put out in the open for people to see without it devolving into a screaming match and I think to that end he’s done pretty well.

  • Often times in debates it's not about changing the mind of the opponent, but rather the audience. Hence the reason many debates try to get as large an audience as possible. If it really was just about the 2 arguers, they could do that in private and in private, there's actually more possibility of a change of mind due to less pressure in being proven wrong by one person in private vs being proved wrong in front of many people.

This means that if you are arguing with a flat earther, you need to be actually willing to change your mind given the right evidence and arguments. If you are LGBT, which i fully support, you need to be willing to change your mind in order to win a supporter.
